St. George’s Day is on April 23rd and is not only Catalonia’s national day but England’s too. St. George is the patron saint of England and his emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England, and part of the United Kingdom flag.

What is the legend of St. George?

Just like here in Catalonia, the most famous legend of St. George is of him killing a dragon. There are many versions of the story of St. George killing the dragon, but most agree on the following:

1. A village was terrorised by a dragon.
2. A young princess was offered to the dragon.
3. When George heard about this situation he rode into the village
on his horse.
4. George killed the dragon and saved the princess.
